Liquid-applied roof waterproofing based on pure polyurethane. It consists of single-component elastomeric polyurethane resins, with or without reinforcement, applied in situ and cured by indirect reaction with ambient moisture.

Once polymerised, it forms an elastic coating comprising a continuous layer fully bonded to the substrate. This produces a waterproof film capable of ensuring the watertightness of the substrate and accommodating substrate movement.

Advantages and Uses

MORCEM COVER POLIURETANO (PU) polyurethane membrane system for waterproofing and coating in the following situations:

  • For roof waterproofing solutions in both new-build and refurbishment projects.
  • Roofs, terraces, balconies and walkable roofs.
  • Can be applied over different types of surfaces (concrete, mortar, brick, fibre cement, ceramic roof tiles, bituminous products, steel, zinc and aluminium).

NOTE: consult our Technical Department regarding application on other types of substrates or in other situations.

The system comprises the following products:

  1. PRIMER: IMPLAREST EPW (0,3 – 0,5 kg/m2) shall be used where moisture is present. On dry substrates, use IMPLAREST FLEX PU (0,3 – 0,8 kg/m2) or IMPLAREST EPOXY POLIUREA/PU (0,3 – 0,5 kg/m2).
  2. MEMBRANE: MORCEM ELASTIC PM (2 and 2,5 kg/m²).
  3. REINFORCEMENT MESH: MALLATEC FV 150 at critical points and on moving or discontinuous substrates.
  4. FINISH: MORCEM ELASTIC PM BARNIZ U.V. (0,25 - 0,35 kg/m2).
  • Installation. This system is installed in situ.
  • Application must be carried out by qualified personnel.
  • MORCEM ELASTIC PM is a highly elastic and wear-resistant membrane which, once applied, provides excellent stability, durability and certified watertightness.
  • The versatility of MORCEM ELASTIC PM allows it to adapt to many different surfaces and materials, making it ideal for irregular areas of any shape, whether curved or angular. Always apply in thin coats on irregular surfaces. Do not apply 1 Kg/m2 in a single coat.
  • Apply in successive coats with a maximum thickness of 0,8 mm each. Drying time between coats is approximately 4-6 hours, depending on ambient temperature and ambient RH.
  • MORCEM ELASTIC PM membrane may also be applied in a single coat at the desired thickness (minimum recommended 1,5 mm) by mixing it with MORCEM ELASTIC PM CATALIZADOR. This increases its physical and mechanical properties, eliminates the risk of internal bubbles and produces a completely solid membrane. It also increases application speed because it can be applied not only with a roller but also with metal or rubber spreaders, thereby reducing direct application costs and drying times. Do not use spray equipment for this type of application. Do not use this additive at temperatures above 25ºC nor take its pot life into account under such conditions.
  • Using MORCEM ELASTIC PM eliminates joints and other types of connections because the finish is uniform and seamless, providing a surface that is easy to maintain and clean.
  • MORCEM ELASTIC PM polyurethane membrane must be applied where there is no moisture or water coming from the support or substrate, either at the time of application or subsequently (groundwater pressure, etc.).
  • If moisture is present in the substrate at the time of application, consult the technical data sheets for our primers, which specify the maximum permissible moisture ranges.
  • As MORCEM ELASTIC PM is an aromatic membrane, it requires protection from solar UV radiation to maintain its properties. Therefore, where such protection is not provided by other physical elements, we recommend applying our coloured polyurethane resins MORCEM ELASTIC PM BARNIZ U.V. (consult the product technical data sheet for application conditions).
  • The properties of MORCEM ELASTIC PM membrane allow it to bond to surfaces such as cement, concrete, polyurethane foam, butyl or bituminous sheets, wood, metal, etc.
  • Thanks to its resistance, it may be made trafficable and slip-resistant by producing a rough finish through the addition of solid particles (silica sand or PLASTITEC-type plastic particles) to the MORCEM ELASTIC PM BARNIZ U.V. aliphatic finish.
  • Once cured, MORCEM ELASTIC PM withstands temperature changes between -40ºC and +80ºC while retaining its elastic properties.
  • MORCEM ELASTIC PM polyurethane membrane is self-levelling and must be applied in thin coats on vertical or inclined surfaces with slopes greater than 1,5 to prevent sagging.
  • It is recommended not to use airless equipment when applying mixtures containing MORCEM ELASTIC PM CATALIZADOR.
  • Ceramic flooring may be installed on top. In this case, it is advisable to apply an additional thin coat of MORCEM ELASTIC PM and broadcast silica sand to improve the mechanical adhesion of the ceramic covering.
  • Repairs are easy to locate and straightforward to carry out.

Suitable Substrates

In general, the following factors must be considered before application:

  • Surface repair: fill existing voids in concrete, remove irregularities, fill cracks (in concrete), remove existing old waterproofing materials, open the pores of ceramic flooring, and clean the substrate, removing dust, dirt, grease or efflorescence. The substrate to be treated must be firm and dry. Check any residual moisture level at the time of application and select the most suitable primer resin.
  • There must be no retained moisture within the substrate or rising damp from the rear face (groundwater pressure).
  • The MORCEM ELASTIC PM polyurethane system may be applied to a wide range of substrates depending on their nature or condition. Application to some of the most common surfaces/substrates is described below; for any other substrate, contact our Technical Department.
  • Consult the Technical Department to define application procedures at critical points and in other situations not covered in this document.

Application Procedure

Once the substrate has been prepared and the primer applied as required, proceed with application of the polyurethane membrane using the following methods:

  • Multi-coat application (traditional or conventional).
    • Open the MORCEM ELASTIC PM container and mix thoroughly by mechanical means until homogeneous.
    • Apply a first coat approximately 0,8 mm thick using a short-pile roller (apply the product as supplied, with no additional dilution required).
    • Allow it to dry completely (depending on weather conditions), approximately 5~6 hours.
    • Apply the next coat under the same conditions as above.
    • Repeat this process as many times as necessary to achieve the desired final membrane thickness.
  • Multi-coat application with intermediate mesh (using MALLATEC FV 150).
    • For use on ceramic substrates, bituminous sheets and, in general, cracked substrates or substrates subject to contraction or expansion movements. Open the MORCEM ELASTIC PM container and mix thoroughly until homogeneous.
    • Apply a first coat approximately 0,8 mm thick using a short-pile roller (apply the product as supplied, with no additional dilution required).
    • Lay MALLATEC FV 150 mesh over the previous coat while it is still wet. Use a dry roller to press the mesh so that it becomes embedded in the resin coat.
  • Apply the next coat of MORCEM ELASTIC PM using one of the following two options:
    • OPTION 1: allow the first coat to dry completely for approximately 5~6 hours, then apply the next coat (with or without MORCEM ELASTIC PM CATALIZADOR, as selected).
    • OPTION 2: (wet-on-wet): apply the next coat directly over the previous coat while it is still wet (possible when MALLATEC FV 150 is present).
    • Consumption with this type of application may be higher than the theoretical consumption without mesh*.

We recommend using a spiked roller after applying the 1st and 2nd coats to prevent bubble formation.
*Consumption with intermediate mesh application: 2,5 Kg/m2.

  • Single-coat application (with addition of MORCEM ELASTIC PM CATALIZADOR)
    • Pour MORCEM ELASTIC PM CATALIZADOR into the MORCEM ELASTIC PM container, always in the fixed proportion supplied by the manufacturer, mixing continuously with medium-speed mechanical equipment (pot life: ±25 min).
    • Pour the mixed material onto the substrate and spread it over the surface. Carry out this operation using a notched trowel or rubber squeegee (a roller may also be used).
    • This single operation achieves the desired thickness in one application, eliminates intermediate waiting times, ensures formation of the membrane without internal bubbles, increases tensile strength and reduces final drying time.

NOTE: when MORCEM ELASTIC PM CATALIZADOR is added, do not use mechanical application equipment (airless type).

  • Mechanical application (using airless equipment)
    • Add 5~10% XYLENE solvent to the MORCEM ELASTIC PM container.
    • Mix using medium-speed mechanical equipment.
    • Apply thin coats using suitable equipment.
    • Allow to dry completely.
    • Repeat this operation until the desired final membrane thickness is achieved.

NOTE:

  • In all cases, consult the waiting and drying times, solutions for critical construction points and application conditions for all products in the relevant technical data sheets or consult our Technical Department.
  • For other types of substrates, further information on the application procedure or any additional queries, consult the technical data sheets for these products or our Technical Department.
  • These guidelines are valid but may be modified according to the condition of the substrates, constraints of the load-bearing structures of the elements to be waterproofed, external weather conditions or conditions at the time of application.
  • All critical points must be treated preventively, including:
    • Coves.
    • Junctions with vertical surfaces.
    • Parapets.
    • Skylights.
    • Expansion joints and cracks.
    • Drains.
  • The following products may be used in addition to the MORCEM COVER system. This protects and improves its physical and mechanical characteristics depending on exposure, desired finish or substrate type:
    • MORCEMREST RF35: for filling and sealing voids in concrete surfaces. This quickly provides a sound filling base with fast drying.
    • IMPLAREST FLEX PU: primer for prior application to substrates to improve adhesion and regularise substrate flatness. It helps improve application on sloping roofs.
    • IMPLAREST EPW: primer for prior application to substrates to improve adhesion and regularise substrate flatness. These applications also regulate the existing moisture level in the substrate.
    • MORCEM ELASTIC PM BARNIZ U.V.: single-component coloured aliphatic polyurethane resin for UV protection on roofs and terraces subject to pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
    • PLASTITEC: plastic particles which, when mixed with MORCEM ELASTIC PM BARNIZ U.V., form a rough surface.
    • MORCEM ELASTIC PM CATALIZADOR: additive that enables MORCEM ELASTIC PM membrane to be applied in a single coat, particularly useful in damp or cold environments (see conditions in its technical data sheet). It also eliminates the risk of internal bubble formation, increases the mechanical properties of the membrane and considerably reduces drying time compared with multi-coat application.
    • BANDTEC: deformable cold-applied adhesive strip comprising an upper non-woven fabric layer and a lower self-adhesive viscoelastic layer; both allow it to adapt to the shape of the substrate. Ideal for structural joints and overlaps between metallic materials.
    • MALLATEC FV 150: fibre mesh for application on weak or non-cohesive substrates, at expansion or construction joints and around vertical perimeters.
    • PUMALASTIC PU: polyurethane sealant for filling joints and cracks (use together with where necessary).

NOTE: consult the technical data sheets or our Technical Department.

  • RECOMMENDED THICKNESS AND CONSUMPTION

A minimum total applied thickness of 1,5 mm is recommended, with an approximate total consumption of between 2 and 2,5 kg/m² when the system is reinforced with MALLATEC FV 150 glass fibre (dry film thickness); applied in one or more coats depending on the method and application conditions.
