Technical Characteristics

Product based on natural hydraulic lime, selected aggregates, and other additives. Cement-free.

Advantages and Uses

  • Suitable for interior and exterior rendering.
  • Suitable for use in renovation due to its high compatibility with traditional systems.
  • For internal and external application in new-build construction where improved living conditions are required compared with cement-based mortars.
  • Highly permeable to water vapour, allowing the substrate to breathe.
  • Excellent adhesion and great plasticity.
  • Smooth, scraped or floated finish.
  • For manual and mechanical application.
  • Rendering and plastering.
  • Filling of joints in masonry and ashlar stonework.
  • Base coat for the application of Morcem® Cal Acabado.
  • Mortar with a low environmental footprint, manufactured using mineral-based materials. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) available.

Suitable Substrates

  • Conventional substrates based on hydraulic binders, brickwork, and masonry.
  • Substrates must be resistant enough, stable, sound, and clean. Free of dust, release agents, organic products, etc.
  • Chemically and mechanically compatible with substrates commonly found in renovation work.
  • The substrate must be thoroughly dampened, and the surface water film must be allowed to disappear before application.
  • On slightly porous substrates, apply a suitable primer (IMPLAFIX), or improve the roughness by mechanical means.
  • Do not apply on top of gypsum or paint.
  • On weak substrates, assess the application of a primer (FIJAMOR) to consolidate the surface.
  • Prepare the substrate by removing any areas with poor cohesion or insufficient strength. Remove loose parts of the masonry and repair with MORCEM® CAL MURO. To increase the adhesion of the render, the joints between masonry units should be recessed. Avoid the use of cement-based mortars to prevent the appearance of salts or the introduction of salts into the masonry.
  • Reinforce critical points with mesh.

Application Procedure

  • To ensure good compatibility between the substrate and the rendering, the following actions must be conducted:
  • Thoroughly dampen the substrates until saturated and wait until the surface sheen has disappeared before applying a regular bonding spatter layer of MORCEM® CAL BASE, approximately 0.5 cm thick, to prevent the appearance of cracks in subsequent layers. Cure the applied material for 24 hours after application. The surface must remain rough, even if a straightedge is passed over it to remove any excess mortar that may have accumulated in certain areas.
  • The following day, pre-dampen the surface before applying MORCEM® CAL BASE, mechanically mixed, to a thickness of 0.8–1.5 cm, either using a trowel or a spray machine. Although the mortar allows greater thicknesses, better results are achieved by applying successive layers of mortar until the required thickness is reached, as this promotes carbonation. Spread the product preferably using a wooden float, followed by levelling with a straightedge and subsequent float finishing.
  • Where greater application thicknesses are required to compensate for differences in substrate evenness, it is necessary to wait at least 48 hours between layers to allow the material to dry, leaving a rough surface to improve adhesion between the layers.
  • Before finishing the rendering or plastering with MORCEM® CAL ACABADO, it is necessary to wait 24–48 hours per centimetre of applied thickness. Dampening of the surfaces and applied mortars is always necessary when conducting multi-layer applications.

Recommendations

  • To increase protection against rain, it is recommended to finish the rendering with Morcem® Cal Acabado.
  • Do not apply the product under 5ºC nor above 30ºC temperature.
  • Do not apply under the risk of frost, rain, heavy wind, or direct sun light.
  • For thickness greater than 1.5 cm it is advisable to apply the product in several layers.
  • It is recommended to lightly spray the product with water the day after application.
  • The mortar must never be stronger than the substrate.
  • Prepare the wall by removing dust, dirt, and efflorescence.
  • Thoroughly dampen the wall.
  • Applying successive layers over damp mortar ensures good adhesion and facilitates carbonation.
  • Adjust the mixing water, avoiding excess water, and allow the required consistency to be achieved through mixing (3–5 min). Do not add water to mortar that has already been mixed.
  • The natural origin of the raw materials used in Morcem® Cal mortars may cause slight variations in colour between different production batches.
